Walking and Cycling

Research of Walking and Cycling focuses on the needs of vulnerable road users (pedestrians and cyclists). The research has traditionally been safety orientated, but focus has shifted towards other aspects as well, such as environmental, public health, equity, etc.

Ongoing projects

Strategies for promoting safer walking and cycling
A project within HASTA (Sustainable Attractive City) aims at improving knowledge of factors and qualities that are important for different groups of pedestrians and cyclists. Another aim is to examine whether improvements of these factors/qualities actually leads to increased mobility in terms of walking and cycling. Subjective and objective data are collected in terms of preferences of difference groups, road users' actual behaviour, and objective description of environmental characteristics of the traffic environment. This will contribute to a demonstration test involving physical measures and promotion.

Yielding behaviour between car drivers and cyclists
The project examines yielding behaviour in different designs of cyclist crossings. A number of different types of crossings have carefully been selected in order to examine yielding behaviour between car drives and cyclists. The selection due to the placement of the yield sign and whether the crossing is marked or not. Field studies were conducted during autumn 2008 in ten Swedish municipalities, which resulted in 5503 observations of yielding behaviour. The report is presented in the beginning of 2009.

Optimal design and use of roundabouts with a focus on cyclists and people with visual disabilities
The project aims at improving knowledge of problems in crossings, especially in roundabouts, for people with visual disabilities. Another aim is to examine pros and cons of today’s design of roundabout if the needs of cyclists are considered. The results will be presented in a licentiate thesis in autumn 2009.

WALCYNG, a research project in the Programme Package Urban transport, DG VII Transport RTD Programme in EU's Fourth Framework Programme. It aimed at finding strategies to encourage walking and cycling as alternatives to short car trips and improve traffic safety at the same time. | More about WALCYNG
