Research

The research conducted within Traffic & Roads focuses on the road user, transport modes and infrastructure - from planning to maintenance. Factors that are affecting society’s need for transportation are studied as well as how infrastructure should be adapted to road users’, citizens’ and societal demand on accessibility, safety, environment, and economics. Research on highway engineering also focuses on characteristics of materials used in road construction.

The research conducted within Traffic & Roads has been empirical, focusing on problem solving and measures, characterised by evaluation, effect valuation, and development of theory and models. Nowadays, the research is more focused on strategies for achieving a sustainable transport system in terms of ecological, economical and social sustainability.

Framework for the research at Traffic & Roads

The framework for the research within Traffic & Roads has two dimensions: (1) long-term demands on sustainability (ecologically, economically and socially) and (2) measure levels on the traffic system (comprehensive, meso- and detailed level).
