Safety effects and injury statistics, STRADA

Strengthening resources within STRADA

Project leader: Monica Berntman

In 1996 the National Road Administration was asked by the government to introduce a new information system, STRADA (Swedish Traffic Accident Data Acquisition), to obtain knowledge of injuries and accidents in traffic. STRADA is based on data from two sources: police and hospitals. In 1998 Lund Institute of Technology participated in the planning of the pilot study conducted in 1999, which included, among other things, emergency wards at eight hospitals in Skåne.

The task of Lund Institute of Technology in STRADA-Hospital has now changed from a national undertaking to long-term regional work which now involves continuous quality scrutiny. This work is done within a network group with representatives from the participating hospitals in Skåne, the National Road Administration Region Skåne, the Department of Social Medicine at Malmö University Hospital and Lund Institute of Technology. The task also entails contacts with municipalities and health care in Skåne, to encourage the use of data from STRADA in their work. The assignment also includes encouraging and participating in the municipalities’ long-term traffic safety programmes.
