2009-12-18 | New report discusses the concept of sustainable development
The concept of sustainability in an urban context is examined and discussed by Till Koglin. The report highlights three important, however often conflicting, dimensions: ecological, economical, and social sustainability. A need for critically reflecting around the concept is emphasised, especially in research concerning ecological and economical sustainability. The report is the first one within the HASTA project “Development of sustainability indicators”.

The course in Road Traffic Safety, financed by SIDA, has recently started. For the ninth time! The 27 participants are traffic planners from developing countries in Africa and Asia. After four weeks, the participants goes back home to work with projects that aim to improve the traffic safety work in their home countries.

Experiences of the automated video analysis system for behavioural studies in traffic environments are presented by Aliaksei Laureshyn, Ĺse Svensson, and Thomas Jonsson in IET Intelligent Transport Systems. The focus of the article is on the detection of cyclists biking in the wrong direction on one-way streets.

2009-10-08 | Injuries in special transport services
Wheelchair-seated passengers using special transportation services (STS) have been injured without being involved in a vehicle crash. The injury incidence rate in STS is 10 per 100,000 trips, which is a high rate compared with other transport modes. This is presented in a study by Anders Wretstrand and is published in Medical Engineering & Physics.

The area of research for the PhD position published is traffic engineering. A study background in Transportation Engineering is a prerequisite. Knowledge in Swedish is necessary, since the PhD student is expected to independently collaborate in empirical field work with Swedish municipalities as well as to carry out interviews with road users. 2011-04-06 | Report on transportation sustainability
Within the framework project HASTA (Sustainable Attractive City) a indicator-set for measuring the sustainability of the transport system. The indicators are based on findings from a large literature review on international research and also Swedish municipalities' own experiences. Zsuzsanna Toth-Szabo and András Varhelyi have been the main authors.

The course Traffic Safety Science (30 ECTS) starts this week. The course gives a scientific approach and establish a system view on traffic safety. It also offers wide knowledge on traffic safety management with an emphasises on traffic engineering and safety evaluations.

Research, funded by VINNOVA, on children and young people in public transport will be starting in autumn 2009. The aim is to theoretically and practically develop preconditions for children and young people to use public transport.

2009-05-12 | New guidelines for high quality bus transport systems
The EU project PROCEED provide guidelines for the design of high quality bus transport systems in small and middle-sized cities. The tool will be available for users (municipal traffic planners, etc.) in the end of summer 2009. Before finishing the tool, PROCEED are holding an international seminar on 2 July 2009 at Management Centre Europe in Brussels.

2009-05-06 | Traffic Calming project in Jaipur, India
Christer Hydén and Ĺse Svensson are visiting Jaipur in India to continue a project concerning traffic calming measures. The results will contribute to Guidelines for Traffic Calming in India. The project runs during two years and will be finished in October. Financier is SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency).

Emeli Adell and András Várhelyi are authors to the paper "Developing human–machine interaction components for a driver assistance system for safe speed and safe distance" - the fourth most downloaded paper in the IET Intelligent Transport Systems journal last year.
